In issue 5...
Firstly, let us address the elephant in the room...
What happened to 2022? -
To cut a long story short, I (Steve) after 30 years in the design, print and publishing industry took a chance, and embarked on my own business venture. 2022 was spent focused on gathering equipment, growing a client base, and just head-down grafting as a new business owner, quite literally ‘back on the tools’.
We’re not blowing our own trumpet, but it has been said that we put together a half decent magazine! we publish MR2 Only Mag purely out of enjoyment, passion for the cars, and feel we give something back to an ownership community that we love, and we’ve been a part of for many years. Granted you can scroll Instagram to get your fix of amazing MR2 pics, but it does not capture the story, the sentiment or the blood, sweat and tears that has gone into many of our MR2s.
We thought long and hard about the viability, and even whether to publish an issue 5. As with everything, the cost of print has risen two-fold, and we appreciate its hard for specialists to support us with advertising. If we can make it pay for itself we’ll keep MR2 Only Mag going.
Your messages of support certainly helped to give us the kick we needed to bring MR2 Only back out of moth balls, and you know what? we’ve really enjoyed it... I said ‘WE’, as the benefit of having Engage Creative & Marketing, is we now have another pair of dedicated creative hands, our talented designer Dan. He’s a bit of a petrol head himself, and a talented vector artist as a side hustle (Check out Retro Mallard on Etsy, he has some great MR2 prints). Dan drives a Suzuki Swift Sport, but we won’t hold that against him. He’s even said during working on these feature pages of issue 5, “this is making me want to own an MR2” ;0)
ISSUE 5 - Despite not publishing for over a year, we never stopped stalking your MR2s on Th’Gram, and had a ‘feature wish list’. There’s no event coverage in this issue, but I think you’ll agree we’ve hit a ‘SWEET SPOT‘ with the featured MR2s! So here goes...
ALBERT CARTER’S JGTC INSPIRED WORK OF ART -
I’ve followed this guy on Instagram for some time, and was top of my dream feature list. Inspired by the 90s JGTC race series this MR2 is nothing short of a work of art from whichever angle you take in its splendour. This MR2 would’nt look out of place on the race Circuit grid. What’s more impressive is that pretty much the entire car was hand-built by Albert himself.
RARE SPECIES - The SW20 Spider is indeed a rare species with less than 100 built by Technocraft, with soft top, and distinctive raised engine lid. AZKA YUQATAMMA has gone one stage further and made his Spider a truly one off with unique styling mods and stance.
AW11 2GR - Jack Graham owns this stunning AW11 with a swapped 3.5L 2GR engine installed by our friend Ian Rattue at RAT2 Motorports. Running twice the standard horsepower and torque, this AW11 is a beast!
TARMAC HIGHLIGHTER - SHARPIE - Jofred Penamante’s SW20 creates a statement, bold and HIGHLIGHTED! bored of dark colours, he wanted to be different, and stand out, and WOW... this MR2 certainly does that!
RED 5 - STANDING BY - JDM obsessed Dan Gadecki and his stunning T-top Supercharged, Star Wars themed ‘X-Wing’.
TTE TURBO - Blast from the past, we got to drive one of these awesome little beasts back in the day, Silverstone Performance’s demo Turbo Roadster. Self confessed ‘MR2 Nut’ Steve shares his ownership story. Toyota missed a trick not making more of these kits.
AW11 VERSION OEM - Kevin Ready took an AW11 with the goal objective of creating a car that was fun, reliable, unique and useable. This 20V silvertop powered purple beauty certainly ticks all the boxes!
J-SPEC HAT TRICK - Our good friends at J-Spec live the dream, not only do they travel the length and breadth collecting MR2s to break for parts to keep your MR2s on the road, they also own the triple, Mk1 V6 (work in progress), a stunning Mk2 Turbo, and a Roadster!
READERS RIDES -
Last but not least, we have 3 awesome readers rides featured.
Two black beauties, and the bright yellow ‘Little Bee’.
Long term MR2 owner John Barratt with his stunning JDM import revision 1. Midlands MR2 Andrew Glynn with his major restoration V6. Lastly Alva Kilkenny, from Galway, Ireland, brought back another MR2 from the brink of the crusher with an incredible restoration.
ALL THAT REMAINS TO BE SAID, IS WE HOPE YOU ENJOY READING THIS ISSUE AS MUCH AS WE ENJOYED PUTTING IT TOGETHER!
